Hack based this novel on his cover artist Jonny M.’s erotic descriptions of women’s libidinous response to the new floor that he had just had installed in his government-assisted housing unit. For his part, Hack knew that Jonny was full of crap but he figured that his readers in the Bible Belt would eat it up.
Here’s a trivia question for you: Who created Mickey Mouse? If you said Walt Disney, you’re only half right!!! Ub Iwerks was an early partner of Disney’s who took a drawing that Walt sketched out of a cartoon mouse and refined it into the character who starred in Steamboat Willie. Iwerks went on to do much of the animation for the early Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony cartoons, becoming so popular that the Motion Picture Academy gave Disney a special Oscar in 1932 for creating him. If you find it odd that Walt got all the credit for creating Mickey, so did Iwerks who had left the studio in 1930 because he was sick of never getting any credit for Disney’s creations despite being a major contributor to them. Disney ultimately received a record 26 statuettes, never sharing credit with any of his collaborators.
This cover was inspired by Hack’s cover artist Jonny M.’s experiences when his home of Los Angeles was facing the scourge of Tropical Storm Hillary. It began when Jonny texted the cover art for The Bunker to a friend the day before, who responded “You’re going to hell.”
A little later when it was pouring rain from Tropical Storm Hilary, Jonny had a vision of an earthquake and having to evacuate his government-assisted housing outside. Shortly afterward, there was an earthquake (no evacuation necessary, though). When he told the same friend about it, they replied “so the earthquake is YOUR fault.”
Jonny made the cover and Hack dashed out a novel around it.
